Blog 4 - Teaching with Kahoot

What Worked?

Creating the lesson over Kahoot was a breeze, it was so intuitive and user friendly that I think I could even throw a quiz together in class and have it ready for students within 15 minutes. However, one thing that did not work because I did not troubleshoot it was the actual link to the Kahoot. I was able to have students join in, although they weren't able to see the questions or answers for some reason. Just another online-teaching mishap that I get the benefit of learning from though!

Any challenges I encountered?

I encountered problems mostly with the format of the app. Students had used Kahoot before and so they were familiar with how it was supposed to work, unfortunately when I tried to have them play through a pre-made Kahoot, they apparently could not see the questions or the answers so they had to completely guess what the correct answer was. I think I need to spend a bit more time with the app to fully grasp its functionality and be prepared to troubleshoot when I encounter technical difficulties.

Lessons learned for the future?

I have learned that with technology and apps, there is always more than meets the eye. In my future practice I need to completely familiarize myself with any application I intend on using in the classroom. I noticed with other groups presentations, they had either a very simple app with one function, or they had ensured that their app would work through troubleshooting to ensure students were able to access and participate in the activity. I must also find more resources that allow simple functionality, or I must be very familiar with the application so I can make it over any hurdles that may present themselves.

  1. Hey Ben, it was a valiant effort trying to get Kahoot to work. Defiantly more time to test it out on our own and with the whole group would have been good. Everybody tried their best to get on, but to no avail. One huge positive for me was the use of the slides to follow the presentation. It was great to have learned how to make them the week before, and it was great how you incorporated them into the presentation. Most were familiar with the Kahoot app, and even thought the students could not play the game still liked kahoot altogether. Keep up the good work!
